The field of perinatology is based on the follow-up and control of women with high-risk pregnancy status. Doctors who want to become perinatology specialists first become obstetricians and then receive training to serve in the field of perinatology, that is, high-risk pregnancy.

Today, as people are more conscious, perinatology specialists have increased in many hospitals.

What is a High-Risk Pregnancy?

Pregnancy in women can be divided into risky and high-risk. Both conditions cover a very large group of pregnant individuals. Although risky pregnancy is more common, high-risk pregnancy should be kept under control.

Persons considered to be in high-risk pregnancy:

  • Risks from previous birth
  • Risks from a problem in the fetus
  • Consanguineous status
  • Extremely thin or overweight pregnancies
  • Pregnancies under the age of 18 and over the age of 40
  • Risks arising from pregnancy with significant chronic diseases

What is Perinatology, How Does It Treat?

Perinatologists apply a number of tests to expectant mothers with high-risk pregnancy conditions. As a result of these tests, the risk status of the person is revealed. According to this risk situation, what the expectant mother should do and the precautions to be taken are determined. In this direction, the expectant mother begins to be followed by the specialist.

Apart from regular check-ups, the expectant mother should be able to reach the doctor whenever she wants. Perinatologists do not apply any treatment. What these specialists want to do is to ensure that the patient in a risky pregnancy situation is affected by these risks in the least possible way and gives birth safely.

Accordingly, a perinatology specialist cannot be expected to eliminate the conditions that pose a risk for the pregnancy status of the mother. In cases where such different diseases put the pregnancy at risk, the patient should seek help and receive treatment from the doctor working in the relevant department.

Which Patients Does the Perinatology Department Treat?

Which patients perinatology specialists should deal with is determined according to the specialist examination. While the condition of some patients is not considered a risky pregnancy, some patients need to be very careful and meticulous during the pregnancy process. For this reason, experts decide for themselves which situations they need to deal with closely.

Normal obstetricians can also deal with patients whose condition is not at risk. The people who need to be dealt with by perinatology are those who are very difficult or impossible to give birth to a healthy child without expert support.

At-risk mothers-to-be are subjected to different tests by perinatology specialists. These tests are used to detect negative situations that the mother may experience during and before birth.

As a result of the tests, a detailed list of instructions about what the pregnant should pay attention to during the pregnancy process is prepared. From this period until the moment of birth, the patient's condition is followed in detail and it is aimed to have a healthy birth.
