Who wouldn't want to start the day energetically and happily after a healthy sleep? Unfortunately, such a sleep experience can often remain in dreams. A lot of money is paid for sleep. Sleeping pills are one of those costs.

It may be tempting at first that sleeping pills provide a quick solution and make them fall asleep easily. However, when you evaluate their long-term effects, you will feel that these drugs have many side effects. They can cause other health problems or a decrease in your performance during the day. In other words, sleeping pills should not be the first method you use when you have insomnia. If you have tried many methods and still cannot sleep, or if you have very serious sleep disorders, you should urgently apply to hospitals with sleep units and undergo a doctor's examination.

The Importance of Sleep

Sleep is one of the basic needs in our life. It is as important a need as breathing and feeding. The importance of sleep has also been scientifically proven, sleep laboratories, dream research units, and sleep units for sleep disorders have been established in hospitals all over the world.

As a result of the researches, it has been proven that sleep, which consists of REM and the NREM stage, which includes four stages, consists of five stages in total. When the contents of these stages are examined, it is known that our body functions slow down, our muscles relax and our brain functions slowdown in NREM, which starts when we fall asleep. In other words, our body and mind have almost taken care of themselves for rest and renewal. In REM, on the other hand, acceleration in brain functions is observed and it is observed through measurements in which the information processing process takes place, as it is during the day. It has been determined that eye movements accelerate and dreams are seen here. Everyday events, unresolved and emotional problems are almost reprocessed in the brain. During the night, these two sleep stages alternate with each other.

Thanks to the repairs in your mind and body during sleep, you will spend the whole day attentive, energetic, resistant to diseases and in a more positive mood. So, we can say that you are not passive when you are asleep and that sleep serves a purpose. In the case of insomnia, the systems in the body begin to collapse. Over the years, animal studies have also shown that prolonged periods of insomnia can cause serious problems and even death.

What can be done to sleep?

Before you even think about taking sleeping pills, make a habit of doing things for sleep. Follow this list regularly. Give yourself some time for your mind to adjust to the new order. If your complaints continue after a certain time, please consult a doctor.

  • The golden rule is to stay away from stressful thoughts and stressful life events as your bedtime approaches. Listening to calming music, daydreaming, watching a funny video, taking a warm shower, or engaging in a hobby you enjoy are activities you can do to distract yourself from stressful thoughts.
  • Do not do heavy sports and exercises just before bedtime. You can choose activities that will relax the muscles.
  • You can consume herbal teas known to have a calming effect, such as chamomile tea, in appropriate amounts.
  • You should avoid drinks and foods containing caffeine a few hours before going to sleep. If you like to drink hot drinks at night, you can choose warm milk or soothing herbal teas.
  • Drinking alcohol to fall asleep easily is also misbehavior. Although it helps to put you to sleep, it disrupts your sleep cycle by affecting your waking time. While you are struggling with the harmful effects of alcohol for a long time, you will create a new problem.
  • Eating and feeling full as your bedtime approaches will also impair your sleep quality. If you have a habit of eating at night, you can spend the night with light foods by using dietitian recipes.
  • You can adjust your room temperature and light. You should prefer to sleep in the dark. Because in the dark, the hormone melatonin is secreted, which facilitates the transition to sleep and the continuation of sleep.
  • Adding regular exercise to your life is one of the effective habits for sleeping. With regular exercise, you take control of your muscles and master the methods of relaxing your muscles.
  • Before sleep, you can choose one of the relaxation exercises and meditation methods.

It is of great importance to create a balanced and planned sleep routine for quality sleep. Set a sleeping and waking time according to your own lifestyle. Even if you can't sleep when these hours come, after following the suggestions we have listed, make sure to go to bed and try to relax and stay in bed. Even if you sleep late, get up at the scheduled time in the morning. Thus, your brain will be programmed over time, and your sleep and wake cycle will be automated.

Let's not forget that the body and mind have the power to influence each other. The relaxation you provide in your body affects your mind, and the relaxation you create in your mind affects your body. Both will be your supporters in the transition to quality sleep.

Do not think that your consciousness is completely disabled during sleep. Is it a coincidence that when mothers suffer from insomnia, they can't wake up even if the ball explodes, but when they hear their baby's voice, they wake up immediately? Sleep is a different state of consciousness. Therefore, you will be able to solve your insomnia problem by changing your harmful habits, applying some methods, improving your lifestyle or with treatment. As long as you don't stop researching what you can do to sleep.
