Modern Dentistry: Multidisciplinary Treatment

  • Modern Dentistry: Multidisciplinary Treatment

In parallel with the changing and evolving world, Dentistry is undergoing a rapid evolution and advancement process. One of the branches where technological possibilities are integrated most rapidly is Dental Services.

Today, patients who come to a dental clinic for treatment are pampered with highly advanced technological facilities from planning to the end of the treatment. Technology helps elevate treatment standards and facilitates the work of dentists. However, carrying out all treatment procedures correctly and on one's own is a challenging task for a single dentist.

Dentistry includes specialized branches that focus on various oral and dental health issues. Here are some of the main branches found in dental practice:

  • General Dentistry: Deals with the general care and treatment of oral and dental health. Performs basic procedures such as dental cleaning, filling, tooth extraction, and gum treatment.
  • Orthodontics: Diagnoses and treats dental and jaw irregularities. Helps straighten teeth using devices like braces, wires, or clear aligners.
  • Endodontics: Focuses on the treatment of dental pulp and root canals. Performs procedures like root canal treatment.
  • Pedodontics (Pediatric Dentistry): Examines and treats children's oral and dental health, providing specialized care for kids.
  • Periodontics: Specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of gum diseases. Performs procedures like gum surgery.
  • Prosthodontics: Deals with dental prosthetics, implant treatments, and esthetic restorations for tooth loss and deficiencies.
  • Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery: Performs surgical procedures in the mouth, jaw, and facial areas, such as tooth extraction, implantation, and cyst removal.
  • Oral Pathology: Focuses on diagnosing and treating diseases in the mouth and surrounding areas, analyzing pathological conditions.
  • Oral Radiology: Evaluates radiological images of the mouth and surrounding areas for diagnosis and treatment planning.
  • Esthetic Dentistry: Specializes in dental and smile aesthetics, offering procedures like teeth whitening, porcelain veneers, and esthetic restorations.

However, Dentistry is not limited to just the mentioned branches. It is a continuously evolving field with various specializations and constantly improving technology and treatment methods. Keeping up with the rapidly advancing technology and changing treatment methods in all these areas is a challenging task for a single dentist.

Dental treatments are more effectively planned and implemented through a multidisciplinary approach, where dentists from different disciplines come together as a team. Each specialized dentist works together like a team to provide more successful treatments for the patient.

For a healthier prosthetic treatment, first, the gum health, or periodontal tissues, must be restored. Similarly, in some cases, orthodontic treatment may be necessary to correct the position of neighboring teeth that have moved or tilted after a tooth extraction to obtain a suitable place for an implant. In addition, before orthodontic treatment, periodontal and restorative treatments may be required to optimize the health of the teeth and surrounding tissues.

Before applying all these multidisciplinary treatments, dentists related to the case should come together as a team and collectively plan for the most aesthetic and functional treatment outcome. The evaluation made collectively by dentists from different disciplines holds great importance for more accurate and successful treatment planning.
