What is Parathyroid Adenoma?
- What is Parathyroid Adenoma?
It is a disorder that occurs due to excessive secretion of the parathyroid gland. The parathyroid hormone secreted in excess of a person with parathyroid adenoma dissolves excess calcium from the bones, and excess calcium in the blood can cause some problems in the health of people. It manifests itself with some symptoms such as irritability, sweating, frequent urination, and constant thirst. some psychiatric findings also play a role in the formation of parathyroid adenoma disease. Excess calcium mixed with the blood is filtered from the kidneys and remains in the kidneys in the form of sediment, causing the formation of stones there. Bone fractures and bone pain may occur. If the high level of parathyroid hormone is detected after the blood test in patients presenting with these findings; A diagnosis of parathyroid adenoma is made. The diagnosis of this disease can be made instantly with the high level of vitamin D and calcium in the blood. The only treatment method for parathyroid adenoma is surgical intervention. Unfortunately, this situation does not go into a healing process with drug treatment or radioactive treatment. If surgical intervention is decided, it is very difficult to determine the location of the parathyroid gland. Despite today's technologies, in these cases, there may be parathyroid hormones and glands, the location of which cannot be determined, about 20 percent. Despite many imaging techniques, the location of the parathyroid adenoma may not be found.
In the scope of imaging techniques, first of all, neck ultrasound is performed. Parathyroid scintigraphy can also be performed together with ultrasound. Most of the time, the location of the parathyroid adenoma, which ultrasound cannot show; shows parathyroid scintigraphy. Despite this situation, it is very difficult to visualize adenomas below one cm. If the location cannot be determined despite all these, a neck scar can also be taken. Despite the condition of each imaging device, adenoma does not manifest itself in 20 percent of cases.
In general surgery, a 2 cm incision is made in the neck for adenomas whose location has been determined during the operation; A point shot is made and the parathyroid adenoma is removed. When the location cannot be determined, all parathyroids in the neck are found and examined one by one with an imaging device during the operation. However, there may be cases that cannot be found. The reason for this is that the adenoma is not in a fixed place, wanders in the chest or is located near the heart. When the location of the adenoma is determined by looking at these areas, it can be easily removed.
