What is Thyroid Goiter?

One of the causes of goiter due to thyroid disease is thyroid goiter. Goiter is a common disease in Turkey. When goiter disease is mentioned, the first thing that comes to mind is the thyroid nodules. This condition, which is defined as thyroid nodules and presents as thyroid nodule disease, is the most common case among thyroid diseases. Nearly 50% of Turkey has thyroid disease. nodule disease constitutes the majority of this. Goiter disease that develops due to thyroid nodule, i.e. thyroid goiter, is seen in one of every 5 people. There are different sizes of nodules that occur in the person. The smallest is 1 mm and the largest can reach up to 10 cm. Although only large nodules were noticed before, with the advancement of technology and the production of new medical devices, even the smallest nodules are noticed.

Whether the nodules in thyroid goiter disease are benign or malignant is revealed as a result of various methods. Primarily on palpation or if it is small in diameter, displacement of the nodule on ultrasound examination indicates that it is benign. Benign nodules show that thyroid goiter does not turn into cancer. If the nodule is fixed and has a gradually growing structure, a piece can be easily taken with fine needle biopsy and sent to pathology. The result obtained from the pathology gives 99 percent accurate information about whether the tissue is cancerous or not. In these diseases, if the biopsy result is clean and the person is not disturbed by the situation, surgical intervention is left to the initiative of the person. As an alternative to surgical intervention for thyroid goiter, which has a large nodule and is benign, radiofrequency treatment can be shown as an example. In this way, the nodules are both destroyed by burning and prevented from forming again by drying.

In radiofrequency treatment, the person is exposed to some radiation. This radiation does not have major side effects on the body. It has emerged as an alternative treatment method for patients who are afraid of the option of surgery because it is a low-rate radiation that we are exposed to in daily life. In order for this procedure to be performed, the nodules in thyroid goiter must be benign.
