  • What is Toxic Adenoma?

The incidence of toxic adenomas is higher with advancing age. However, nodules are thought to develop in the person's childhood or youth. Some independent nodules that cause hyperfunction work independently of normal thyroid tissue. The fact that less amount of hormone is secreted from the glands that are normal at a young age is proof that toxic adenoma can be caused in later ages. These adenomas gradually enlarge with the patient and when sufficient growth occurs, it manifests itself by secreting excessive amounts of hormones. The masses found in the glands of patients diagnosed with hyperthyroidism, which manifests itself with the secretion of more thyroid hormone, are maximum 10 cm. up to reach.

Toxic adenoma is more common in women than men. It grows rapidly and may not reveal itself until it grows insidiously and secretly. It may cause persistent hoarseness or persistent cough in the patient. The disease has a genetic history. As familial factors, it can provide continuity from generation to generation.

First of all, physical examination should be done. During this examination, analyzes are requested. T3 and T4 values are checked. If high findings are reached, a diagnosis of hyperthyroidism can be made. Adenomas that are firm, have an irregular course, or are not independent but adherent carry the risk of cancer. The most appropriate situation for this would be to take a sample piece and act according to the result from the pathology. Toxic adenoma status should be compared by looking at the nodules by looking at the thyroid scintigraphy. The cystic state of the nodules is determined by thyroid scintigraphy and thyroid ultrasound. The location, number, structure and size of these toxic adenomas are determined.

Fine-needle biopsy is performed before the results are obtained from the pathology. If there is a cystic situation and a dangerous situation, the toxic adenomas here are removed. Although drug treatment is recommended primarily, in cases where the cysts are large, they should be removed.

Radioactive iodine or surgical procedure options are often preferred when treating toxic adenoma. Radioactive iodine administration after the surgical procedure is the application to prevent the recurrence of adenomas. In small cysts, radioactive iodine is given only after medical treatment. The age of the patient and the diseases he has experienced are the factors that determine the treatment stage.
