Vaginismus Treatment

"Is vaginismus treatment possible? How can I overcome this problem that I have struggled with for years? How can I progress without the help of others?" are questions that occupy the minds of many vaginismus patients. However, treatment is essential for a permanent solution to the problem.

What is Vaginismus Treatment Like?

In this section, you can find comprehensive information about the treatment of vaginismus and the methods used in this treatment process. Detailed information about the vaginismus treatment methods applied in our clinic is provided here.

Pre-Treatment Gynecological Evaluation for Vaginismus

The diagnosis and treatment process of vaginismus begins with a gynecological evaluation. Similar to other sexual issues, before embarking on vaginismus treatment, the individual needs to undergo a simple gynecological examination by an experienced gynecologist. This allows for a clearer diagnosis to be established.

When gynecological evaluation is neglected, the risk of making wrong decisions in the treatment process increases due to the unclear understanding of the root cause. For instance, if the underlying cause of vaginismus is physical barriers, couples may be directed towards unnecessary therapies like psychotherapy, resulting in financial and emotional losses. Many cases of patients subjected to unnecessary treatments in this way can be observed.

How is Vaginismus Treated?

The primary cause of vaginismus is often psychological anxiety and concerns developed in the past, accounting for around 90%. The remaining 10% may involve organic obstacles stemming from an individual's inherent physical structure. In other words, the main cause of vaginismus is usually psychological; however, in some cases, physical structural reasons that hinder sexual intercourse may be present. In cases where the cause is not psychological, difficulties in engaging in sexual intercourse due to organic (structural) reasons can be resolved through simple surgical procedures.

Behavioral and cognitive sexual therapy approaches are commonly preferred worldwide in vaginismus treatment. Hypnotherapy (hypnosis treatments) is a relatively newer method among treatment approaches.

Cognitive Approaches in Vaginismus Treatment

Within cognitive approaches, misunderstandings about the structure of the vagina and hymen from the past are rectified, and missing information is supplemented. These corrections in information alter individuals' views on sexuality and introduce a new perspective. The aim is to raise awareness levels during this process.

Behavioral Approaches: Vaginismus Exercises

The behavioral approaches of vaginismus treatment are commonly known as "Vaginismus exercises." These exercises include mirror exercises, massage (sensate focus), Kegel exercises, finger exercises, and dilator practices. In our clinic, a strong emphasis is placed on dilator practices, which are performed under the supervision of a specialist physician. Additional homework assignments are not given during this process.

Involving Male Partners in Treatment

In our country, it is a fact that taboos related to sexuality still exist. For this reason, cognitive-behavioral sexual therapy programs should not only be applied to women but also to male partners. Men may also lack essential knowledge about sexuality due to existing taboos, and these gaps can hinder sexual intercourse. Sexual intercourse is a shared matter requiring both the man and the woman to approach it in harmony. Therefore, cognitive-behavioral sexual therapy programs should be extended to male partners to help develop their understanding and expectations regarding sexual intercourse.

Addressing Male-Specific Issues

Certain urological problems in men can also contribute to the development of vaginismus. Hence, it is of great importance to involve male partners in the treatment process. Over time, sexual problems may arise in male partners of vaginismus patients. Although initially there might be no problems, vaginismus can eventually lead to sexual issues in men, including reduced sexual desire, erectile difficulties, and premature ejaculation.

Application of Transitional Techniques

This method supports the patient's relaxation, thereby increasing self-confidence and belief in their abilities. Simultaneously, improved muscle control is achieved, granting the patient greater mastery over their body. Throughout the treatment process, the patient learns to regain control over their body, enabling them to become more controlled during sexual intercourse.

Personalized Approach to Vaginismus Treatment

Vaginismus treatment should be tailored entirely to individual needs. Each person's vaginismus issue, severity, and underlying causes differ. Therefore, vaginismus treatment methods should reflect the individual's specific situation. All these factors should be carefully considered when determining the treatment approach. At the beginning of vaginismus treatment, individuals may have concerns about the process. Providing support to alleviate worries like "How will vaginismus treatment work? Will I be able to perform the exercises? What if I fail? How will vaginismus treatment proceed?" can encourage them to embark on the treatment journey.
