IVF Retention Symptoms

Pro.Dr. Bülent Tıraş gave information about the symptoms of in vitro fertilization.
In vitro fertilization is one of the assisted reproductive techniques that helps couples who cannot conceive naturally to hold their babies in their arms. In the last step of this treatment, which consists of various steps, you will have to wait for a certain period of time to understand whether the embryo has adhered after the embryo transfer has taken place.
After the embryo transfer, you can start to follow all the changes in your body until the day you have the test. These changes may be symptoms of pregnancy or may occur as side effects of the drugs you use.
You can take a look at the symptoms you will encounter during the waiting period after embryo transfer and the reasons for their emergence below.

In vitro fertilization symptoms

In IVF treatment, after the embryo is transferred to the uterus, it is necessary to wait for a certain period of time before taking a pregnancy test. You may wonder if the symptoms you are experiencing during this time are due to pregnancy.
You can take a look at 10 of the symptoms that may indicate that you are pregnant after embryo treatment in IVF treatment.

1. Bleeding or spotting

About a week after the embryo transfer, you may experience light bleeding or spotting called implantation bleeding. However, bleeding after the transfer may also indicate that the embryo has failed to adhere. At the same time, the hormone progesterone used in the treatment can also cause bleeding. Therefore, if you see bleeding after embryo transfer, you should inform your doctor.

2. Pain

Although many women feel pain in the lower abdomen before menstruation, this pain may also indicate that the transfer has been successful. It is normal to feel slight contractions in the early stages of pregnancy. This is because the muscles and ligaments in the pelvis are preparing for the baby's development. However, since the cause of the pain may be the progesterone used during the treatment, the pain felt in the abdomen does not necessarily indicate that the embryo transfer has been successful.

3. Breast tenderness

Pain, tenderness and swelling in the breasts are among the pregnancy symptoms. However, since the progesterone used during treatment may also cause breast tenderness, this symptom may not have arisen due to pregnancy. If you continue to use progesterone during the post-transfer waiting period, it is normal to feel tenderness in your breasts.

4. Fatigue

Fatigue is a common symptom after embryo transfer. Since fatigue can be seen in the early stages of pregnancy, this symptom may indicate that the embryo transfer was successful. However, you should not forget that the progesterone drugs you use as part of the treatment can also cause fatigue.

5. Nausea

Nausea can be another symptom that indicates that the embryo transfer has been successful and that the attachment has taken place. However, since nausea usually starts between the 4th and 6th weeks of pregnancy, you should inform your doctor if you frequently have symptoms such as nausea and vomiting after the transfer.

6. Bloating

Bloating is usually caused by increased levels of the hormone progesterone. If you have swelling in your abdomen after the transfer, it may be due to pregnancy or the progesterone you use as part of the treatment. Progesterone can slow down your digestion, making you feel bloated.

7. Change in vaginal discharge

If the embryo transfer was successful, there may be differences in the vaginal discharge. This is due to the changes in the hormones secreted in the body during pregnancy. However, you should keep in mind that using vaginal progesterone can also cause changes in vaginal discharge. At the same time, when symptoms such as itching, discharge and burning are seen together, this may indicate vaginal infections, so you should not neglect to inform your doctor as soon as possible.

8. Increased need to urinate

Frequent urination is seen due to the increase in progesterone and hCG hormones. As your hormone levels change with pregnancy, the blood volume in your body will increase, which will cause you to go to the toilet more. However, as frequent urination may be a sign of a urinary infection, you should inform your doctor if you experience symptoms such as pain, bleeding, fever, nausea and vomiting while urinating.

9. Menstrual delay

If you normally have regular periods, pregnancy may be the cause of your missed period. For this reason, you may consider taking a pregnancy test if your period is delayed.

10. Absence of any symptoms

Every woman and every pregnancy is different. Therefore, having no symptoms after embryo transfer does not mean that you are not pregnant. If you don't have pregnancy symptoms, you shouldn't worry and wait for a pregnancy test before making any judgments.

Pregnancy Test After Embryo Transfer

You need to wait for a while to understand whether pregnancy has occurred after embryo transfer. This is due to the fact that a certain period of time must pass before the amount of hCG in the body can be detected by the pregnancy test.
After embryo transfer, your doctor may want to do a pregnancy test about 10 days later. In this pregnancy test, which will be done by taking a blood sample, the amount of hCG in your blood will be measured. If this hormone is more than normal in the blood, it will show that you are pregnant.
During the time you have to wait after the transfer, you may want to get impatient and do a home pregnancy test. However, when you do a home pregnancy test, you may encounter a false positive result. Since the fertility drugs you use may affect the results of home pregnancy tests, it is important to wait for the time recommended by your doctor and to have a blood pregnancy test when the time comes.
