Vaginismus, a problem seen in 1 out of every 10 women in Turkey, causes couples to have a hard time during sexual intercourse. Vaginismus is a condition that prevents sexual intercourse and causes stress and sadness, especially on women. The woman who is unable to unite with her partner becomes even more reluctant, feeling worthless or useless. If we define vaginismus briefly; outside the vagina, we can say that the pelvic floor muscles, which are in the 1/3 parts, are contracting uncontrollably. As a result of this situation, which is not in the hands of the woman, sexual intercourse cannot occur. In some cases, sexual intercourse may have taken place, but each time it is very difficult. Vaginismus is a disease and must be treated by physicians who are experts in the field. Because vaginismus can be extremely depressing and wearisome for both the woman and her partner. The degree of the disease varies from person to person. Some allow intercourse, but there is severe pain during intercourse. Some people do not want to have sexual intercourse at all. Women with vaginismus will contract their bodies so much that not only the vagina but the whole body is adversely affected by it. The tightness of the muscles from head to toe can be uncomfortable in the form of body aches for a few days after the intercourse attempt.

What kind of treatment is followed in vaginismus?

In order to make a definitive diagnosis of vaginismus, an evaluation is made by a specialist gynecologist. This examination, which is painless and easy, takes a few minutes and does not cause discomfort to the patient. This gynecological examination is important for the correct diagnosis of vaginismus. Vaginismus, which is a temporary disease, has a cure and does not require any medication or surgical intervention. The patient must accept the problem and be willing to heal. After this stage, the physician will explain the ways to the patient to follow in order for the vaginismus to disappear. During the treatment, the aim is to eliminate the fear and immunity of the patient against the genital area. The methods used in the treatment can be listed as follows;

  • Informing the patient in detail about the genital area and the disease
  • Utilizing relaxation exercises and relaxation techniques
  • Exercise to hold a mirror to the genital area
  • Trying to get rid of negative feelings and thoughts against the idea of sexuality and convincing oneself about it
  • Kegel exercise
  • Getting used to touching the genital area
  • Finger exercises

Vaginismus treatment usually takes 3 to 6 months. However, although this situation varies from patient to patient, it can sometimes be treated even in a few days. However, during the vaginismus treatment period, the partner should also help the woman, support her and relieve her psychologically. An accusatory and judgmental approach prolongs the healing process of vaginismus in women. Some patients may even leave the treatment unfinished because of blaming themselves. Vaginismus is a problem that will definitely go away when treated correctly. For this reason, the more the person frees his mind, the more positive the treatment will progress in that direction.
