Tooth discoloration can cause social and psychological problems in children, causing loss of self-confidence. External tooth discoloration in children can be seen in both primary and permanent teeth.

External Coloring of Children's Teeth

Poor oral hygiene, use of iron preparations and chromogenic bacteria play a role in the etiology of exogenous coloration. Chromogenic bacteria can cause discoloration on the tooth surface such as black/brown, green, orange or blue in children.

The most common coloration that parents apply to pediatric dentists is the black coloration seen in milk teeth. Since many of the chromogenic bacteria that cause these discolorations multiply in the presence of iron, the probability of discoloration increases in children using iron preparations. After the use of these drugs, it is necessary to rinse the mouth with water and clean the tooth surfaces in order to reduce the colonization of chromogenic bacteria that need iron.

Polishing is usually sufficient for the treatment of external tooth discoloration in children. The polishing process is done with the help of brush and paste and children do not feel any pain.
A pediatric dentistry specialist should be consulted as soon as possible in order to determine the cause of tooth discoloration, which can be confused with tooth decay from time to time, and to take the necessary precautions.
