For this reason, most people turn to herbal tea. So, are herbal teas during pregnancy safe?

Is It Useful to Drink Herbal Tea During Pregnancy?

Many women choose to drink herbal tea while pregnant or breastfeeding to help with troubling symptoms. Some herbal teas are safe to drink during this period, as long as you limit them to 1-2 cups a day and consult your doctor first. Although herbal teas contain natural ingredients, that doesn't necessarily mean they're safe. The amounts of substances they contain may vary and may also contain substances not listed on the label. These components may pass to your baby or adversely affect other medicines you are taking.

There are different opinions on the safety of herbal teas for both pregnant and non-pregnant women. Most trademarks of herbal teas are considered safe for anyone to consume in moderate amounts. Herbal teas that are considered unsafe are those that are not commercially produced, those that are made with excessive amounts of herbs, and those that are made with herbs that are known to be poisonous. It's always a good idea to talk to your doctor before taking any natural treatment, including herbal teas.

Which Herbal Teas Should Be Drink During Pregnancy?

As a general rule, choose teas made from the fruits and herbs you will use in your cooking. Never make your own herbal tea from herbs you have collected while pregnant or breastfeeding. Large amounts of certain herbs can possibly induce contractions and increase your risk of premature birth or adversely affect your baby.

Some of the herbal teas you can consume in this process:

  • Peppermint tea: Peppermint is one of the most commonly used herbal teas during pregnancy. Studies have shown that it does not harm the mother or the baby, but you should definitely avoid excessive consumption in very large quantities and as it can stimulate menstruation in the first trimester.
  • Raspberry tea: Some women drink raspberry tea during the last trimester to help them prepare for childbirth. This tea is safe during pregnancy, but some studies have shown that it can stimulate contractions. That's why it's a good idea to be mindful during the first trimester.
  • Ginger tea: Ginger can help relieve nausea. It is recommended to be consumed in moderation while pregnant.
  • Green tea: Green tea is not a true herbal tea. It contains caffeine, so you should not consume it excessively during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
  • Chamomile tea: A cup of chamomile tea before bed can relax you, but still avoid drinking large amounts.
