Endometrial hyperplasia is a condition in which the membrane tissue in the uterus, called the endometrium, thickens more than necessary. Endometrial hyperplasia, popularly known as 'thickening in the uterus', is very effective in the development of uterine cancer.
What Are the Symptoms of Endometrial Hyperplasia?
The most common symptom in women with endometrial hyperplasia is irregular menstrual bleeding. These bleedings are mostly seen in women over 40 years of age. There are also women at risk. Women with obesity problems are in the risk class for endometrial hyperplasia due to excessive accumulation of estrogen hormone in the body.
How is Endometrial Hyperplasia Diagnosed?
Ultrasonographic imaging technique should be used to diagnose endometrial hyperplasia. When the patient sees a suspicious symptom, he should consult a doctor. During ultrasonography, it can be seen that the lining of the uterus thickens. However, in order to make a definitive diagnosis, tissue from the uterus should be taken and pathological examination should be performed. The process of removing tissue from the uterus is called 'endometrial biopsy'.
How Is Endometrial Hyperplasia Treated?
In the treatment of women with endometrial hyperplasia, the degree of the disease and the desire of the person to have a child are taken into consideration. In case of simple hyperplasia, treatment with oral pills is possible. This treatment takes 3-4 months. When the treatment is completed, a second biopsy is performed to examine whether the disease responds to the treatment.
If the hyperplasia has advanced and is more likely to turn into cancer, surgery may be considered. However, since the uterus will be removed in this operation called hysterectomy, it is very important whether the patient wants a child or not.
