What Comes to Mind When You Think of Women’s Health?

As a society, we often answer this question with “reproductive health,” or in other words, “fertility.” However, a woman’s health or life is not solely about reproduction. A healthy woman is someone who does not feel incomplete biologically, physiologically, psychologically, or sexually, is self-sufficient, and reflects this to those around her.

Because our women are raised focusing only on “fertility,” they are often monitored for physical changes during adolescence, particularly at the start of their menstrual cycle, and are prepared for life primarily as potential mothers, rather than as women.

The most important message we need to convey to our women is how valuable sexual health and psychological integrity are. A woman must feel like a woman before becoming a mother and should share this feeling with her partner. When educating my patients on this subject, I emphasize the following key points:

  • Healthy sexual activity to feel psychologically comfortable and safe
  • Contraception when not desiring pregnancy
  • Annual gynecological and ultrasound examinations, as well as breast exams
  • Being informed about vaccination programs and screenings to prevent diseases

The timing of visits varies by age group and life stage:

  • Adolescent Period (Before Menstrual Cycles Start): At least one examination is necessary if there are known growth and development issues.
  • After Menstruation Begins: One examination is needed until a regular cycle is established.
  • Around the 20s and Later: Sexually active women should have an annual examination, while inactive women can be examined every 2-3 years.
  • Ages 30 to 45: Women should undergo annual check-ups, regardless of sexual activity.
  • Menopause: Annual check-ups and screenings should continue, and these examinations can be spaced to every three years after the cessation of menstruation.

What complaints should women pay attention to outside of routine screenings?

This question should also be answered by considering women’s age groups, as the most common issues vary. The following are the most frequent reasons for consultation by age group:

  • Adolescence: Menstrual irregularities
  • Ages 20-30: Ovarian cysts, uterine fibroids, and vaginal infections
  • After Age 30: Infertility treatment
  • Pre-Menopause: Vaginal dryness and decreased sexual desire

What are the treatment plans and methods for these complaints?

Different age groups require different treatment protocols. In my practice, I adopt a holistic approach when providing treatment. Rather than focusing solely on the complaint, I aim to identify and address the underlying factors contributing to the issue. Ensuring the patient believes in and trusts the treatment plan, and that they leave the consultation without any unanswered questions, is essential for successful recovery.

Do you follow a similar approach during pregnancy treatments?

In addition to the physical changes in the body, pregnancy brings significant psychological changes, largely due to hormonal influences. When monitoring pregnancies, I prioritize close attention to the patient, answering their questions, being aware of emotional fluctuations during each stage, and responding appropriately. Informing partners during these consultations and offering advice also plays a crucial role in ensuring a smooth pregnancy.

Finally, what are your future plans in women’s health and cosmetic gynecology?

I aim to continue refining my treatment principles, which focus on compassion, sensitivity, and respect for the emotional and delicate nature of women. At the same time, maintaining scientific rigor is my most important goal. In the field of cosmetic gynecology, I plan to stay up-to-date by adopting new technologies, surgical techniques, and medication therapies.

To my dear patients, I am here in Samsun Atakum to answer your questions and address your concerns. I look forward to seeing you.
