What is Parathyroid Hyperplasia?

  • What is Parathyroid Hyperplasia?

Parathyroid diseases may not always give serious findings. The patient may not feel this condition because there is no complaint in the person. However, if there is a parathyroid hormone in the body and the patient does not realize it, the patient's body develops defense mechanisms to remove this excess calcium. Bones can damage their own tissue to be excreted from the body through the urine.

During the parathyroid hyperplasia surgical operation, a 3 cm incision is made in the anterior part between the neck and the shoulder. Similar to toxic adenoma surgery, an incision is made, but instead of a gland, the masses are found and removed. Various imaging devices and technological opportunities are used in this process. In addition, the method of marking with wire during this surgery is also very beneficial.

The finding of parathyroid hyperplasia is related to kidney disorders. Patients with chronic renal failure have parathyroid hyperplasia. When kidney patients undergoing dialysis prolong this process while waiting for a suitable kidney donor, the incidence of parathyroid hyperplasia increases. After long waiting, the kidney keeps the calcium in the body, causing this process to accelerate. It is a common case in this kind of body disorders.

In cases requiring surgical operation, the surgeon finds two glands on the right kidney and two glands on the left kidney with imaging devices. In some cases, these glands may not be found by replacing them. In such cases, the kidney and its surroundings should be reviewed. As the parathyroids begin to grow, they are displaced and are not found where they belong. The glands found are checked one by one. The tumor usually appears as attached to four glands. Therefore, it is important to locate and examine all glands. Although the increase in the number of cells in the gland and the change in its structure give the signal of malignant tissue, that is, cancerous cell, these structures are not cancer. Since parathyroid hyperplasia is present in all glands, surgical operation is required. In the surgical operation, all glands must be removed and kept under control one by one. Afterwards, the patient will regain his former health in a short time with drug treatment. Since the probability of cancerous tissue development in this disease is as low as one percent, there are usually no situations to be afraid of. Only the location of the glands can force the surgeon.
