Preeclampsia is a condition in which the placenta cannot provide nourishment to the baby as a result of excessive narrowing of the arterial vessels in the uterine bed. This can have fatal consequences. Preeclampsia, also called pregnancy poisoning, is not a known type of poisoning.

What Causes Preeclampsia (Pregnancy Poisoning)?

It is not known exactly why preeclampsia occurs. However, it has been determined that certain gene transitions, damage to blood vessels, insufficient blood flow in the uterus and some problems in the immune system are effective in the formation of preeclampsia.

What is Preeclampsia (Pregnancy Poisoning) Symptoms?

Preeclampsia has many symptoms. The symptoms are as follows;

- Little urination

- High blood pressure in pregnant women

- Forgetfulness

- Facial edema and swelling

- Decrease in baby's movements

- Sudden visual impairment

- Clouding of consciousness

- Stomach ache

- Fatigue

- The ring is tight on the finger during pregnancy

- Low amount of protein in the urine

- Pain in the liver

- Vomiting

- Nausea

Who is at Risk for Preeclampsia (Pregnancy Poisoning)?

Those at risk for the formation of preeclampsia can be listed as follows;

- People with a family history of pregnancy poisoning

- Mothers who had hypertension during a previous pregnancy

- Expectant mothers with obesity problems

- Mothers who have given birth to four or more

- Expectant mothers with hidden diabetes and gestational diabetes during pregnancy

- Mothers with chronic kidney disease

- Expectant mothers with autoimmune disease

- Twin and triple pregnancy cases

- Expectant mothers who are outside the age range of 18 - 35

- Expectant mothers who have experienced their first pregnancy

How Is Preeclampsia (Pregnancy Poisoning) Treated?

In case of preeclampsia, the only treatment to be done is to give birth to the baby. Since preeclampsia can cause very serious problems, even in mild cases, the baby and mother should be followed closely. When the physician is convinced that the baby can live in the outside world at the time of mild preeclampsia and approves the birth, the delivery should be done without delay. In order to prevent the problem from getting worse before birth, treatment is started with magnesium supplementation for the mother.
