Asperger's syndrome is a disorder that begins in childhood and develops over time. Introversion begins at first, followed by difficulties in communicating and skill difficulties. It is called by this name because it was first described by Doctor Hans Asperger.

As the general symptoms of Asperger's syndrome are similar to autism, it was included in the Autism Spectrum Disorder class in 2013. The difference from autism is that it does not show any regression in language or speech skills and it occurs in children at a later age.

What Are the Symptoms of Asperger's Syndrome?

The most typical symptoms seen in children with Asperger's syndrome are:

  • Difficulty starting and maintaining a conversation
  • Lack of social skills
  • Loving routine
  • Excessive introversion
  • Repetitive behaviors and conversations
  • Inability to make eye contact
  • Giving a formal speech
  • Excessive detail on the subject
  • Weakness in motor skills compared to peers
  • Lack of empathy

The presence of one of these symptoms is not sufficient for the diagnosis. A child who has serious social problems along with a few symptoms should be checked by specialist doctors or psychologists.

How Is Asperger's Syndrome Diagnosed?

Asperger's syndrome is most common in children aged 4-11 years. In children of this age group, symptoms of social interaction disorder, cognitive developmental delay, repetitive behavior patterns, and excessive introversion are sought. The motor development, learning abilities, life skills, strengths and weaknesses of children in different environments are determined.

Early diagnosis is very important in Asperger's syndrome. Adults are much more difficult to diagnose.

Treatment of Asperger's Syndrome

Asperger's syndrome is a lifelong condition. Although a completely cured method has not yet been found, the symptoms can be greatly reduced.

The social interaction of the child with Asperger's syndrome with other children should be increased. Special trainings to be given to the child and the family enable children to develop themselves and become active individuals in the society. The treatment is aimed at bringing the child into social life by improving his/her social and communication skills.

Qualifications to look for in school education for children with Asperger's syndrome:

  • Working groups focused on attention
  • Having a communications specialist
  • Suitable for social interaction
  • Paying attention to the child's special interests and abilities
  • Include an individual training program
  • Consultancy service
  • Emphasis on developing empathy skills

It is important for families to be aware of the child's situation at school and in the classroom. They should closely follow the development of the child by communicating with their teachers frequently.

According to the child's development level and condition, the recommended education should be continued at home. This education is adjusted taking into account the individual needs of the child and the possibilities of his family.
